Ted works primarily in oil, but also in other media such as watercolor, egg tempera, ink, acrylic and pastel.
His interest in drawing and visual art goes back as far as he can remember. Both his mother Joan Howard Kutscher and grandfather John Tasker Howard (composer and musical historian ) were painters. He took up oil painting while in law school.
Islands and shore-related landscapes are frequent subjects of his paintings—his wife Susan and he have lived on Vashon Island since 1986 where they own a farmhouse originally built in 1897, and Susan’s family lives on Orcas Island. He is from New England and enjoys getting to New Hampshire and Maine to paint in their quintessentially coastal settings.
